In personal finance as in life, there will always be setbacks. Just when you think you've built up enough of an emergency fund, you'll be called upon to spend some of it. As you start to believe that your retirement is in reach, the stock market may drop precipitously in a matter of days, leaving you in doubt about your future. If there is any certainty in this life, it is that you cannot predict the future.
You cannot choose your circumstances, but what you can choose is your attitude as you are confronted with these setbacks and challenges. So how can you survive the massive setbacks that are sure to confront us all?
Keep Your Head Up: Although you cannot always choose your circumstances, you can always choose how you respond. Letting yourself dwell on the negative will not help you get through a setback, but focusing on your next step and what you can do to fix the problem and avoid similar events in the future just may.
Reach Out To Family and Friends: When you are faced with a major life changing situation, there is no better time to be around family and friends. No one else will provide the kind of love and support that they will. Even if they aren't financially able to support you through a difficult time, their emotional support may be all you really need.
Reach Out To Your Community: Churches, community centers and other organizations are a great source of support in times of need. Seek help from those who make a business of assisting the less fortunate. Depending on the extent of your difficulties, these organizations can often provide not only spiritual and emotional support but also more tangible benefits such as food and shelter.
Keep Moving Forward: Regardless of the situation that you are faced with, life goes on. Keep focused on your objectives and start making the changes that will enable you to get to your destination. If your retirement account balances drop, save more in the future. If you find yourself in debt, make the changes you must to keep yourself on track. It is never too late to adapt your strategy to your circumstances.
Give Back When Others are in Need: Once you get through the hard times in your own life, consider giving back to others in any way you can. Now that you have learned from your own trials and tribulations, you are in a unique position to understand the less fortunate, and give back in a big way.
